Shubarev Maxim: Early education and career foundations

Maxim Shubarev was born in the vibrant city of Leningrad in 1968, into a family where both parents were skilled engineers. Growing up, he actively engaged in various sports, reflecting a discipline and determination that hinted at his future business acumen. Initially, he harbored aspirations for a military career, indicative of his commitment and leadership qualities from a young age.

In 1985, his academic and professional course took a significant turn when he enrolled in the Leningrad Institute of Aviation Instrumentation. Concurrently, Shubarev Maxim embarked on a practical career path at the research-production association Leninets, contributing to the production of radio electronics. This early exposure to a technical environment played a crucial role in shaping his future endeavors.

Towards the end of the 1980s, Maxim Valerevich Shubarev dedicated a period of his life to serving in the navy. This experience further honed his discipline and resilience. Upon returning to civilian life, he redirected his educational focus, transferring to the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute (LPI) to study business economics. This change marked a pivotal shift towards the realm of economics and management.

During his time at LPI, Maxim Shubarev demonstrated impressive organizational talents. He was instrumental in establishing a local chapter of AIESEC, a global network fostering the development of young economists. His efforts with AIESEC facilitated valuable exchange opportunities, enabling LPI students to gain insights from Western practices, and offering international students the chance to gain experience in local industries. The future businessman's academic journey culminated in 1993 when he successfully defended his thesis.

Post-graduation, Maxim Shubarev continued to work at Leninets for an additional year, where he was promoted to the role of vice president. This period was marked by significant professional growth and learning, laying a solid foundation for his subsequent entrepreneurial ventures. Eventually, he took a leap into the business world, leaving Leninets to start his own company, setting the stage for his future successes in the real estate agency and development sector.

Maxim Shubarev ventured into the construction sector by establishing the company Petersburg Real Estate. The company made its mark in 1995 by successfully completing its inaugural project, an apartment building previously abandoned mid-construction by another developer. This accomplishment showcased the company's capability to take on challenging projects and deliver results.

The economic turmoil of August 1998, marked by a widespread financial default, posed significant challenges to many businesses, including that of Shubarev Maxim. Despite these adverse conditions, his company demonstrated resilience and sustained growth. By the year 1999, Petersburg Real Estate had undergone substantial expansion, evolving beyond its initial scope. The growth and success of the firm led to its transformation into a corporation, with the founder taking the role of president. This transition marked a significant milestone in his career, solidifying his status as a key player in the construction industry.

Maxim Shubarev and Setl Group: The company's evolution

Under the strategic direction of Shubarev Maxim in 2006, the company underwent a significant rebranding to become Setl Group, with the founder assuming the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors. Throughout the 2000s, Setl Group emerged as a dominant force in the North-Western Federal District's construction market, and by the mid-2010s, it had expanded its influence to the national level. The company is consistently ranked among the top three for the annual volume of constructed facilities. While primarily focusing on developments in Saint Petersburg and the Leningrad and Kaliningrad Regions, Setl Group is recognized as a nationally vital enterprise.

Over its 29-year trajectory, Setl Group has constructed over 11 million square meters of real estate, accommodating nearly 410,000 residents. 2022 was a particularly productive year, with about 1.8 million square meters of space commissioned. The company is actively working on projects encompassing more than 13 million square meters and possesses extensive land holdings that support continued development through 2050.

Maxim Valerevich Shubarev emphasizes that Setl Group's success is grounded in key principles: unwavering commitment to clients and partners, and an insistence on maintaining the highest quality standards throughout the construction process. The company prides itself on cultivating leadership from within its ranks, as opposed to recruiting top managers from outside sources.

Additionally, Shubarev Maxim Valerevich notes the company's focused approach to its core business. Setl Group deliberately steers clear of resource extraction and construction material production, sectors often pursued by other developers. This strategic decision allows the company to concentrate fully on construction activities. The head of the company believes that effective management hinges on the ability to delegate appropriately. He advocates for a leadership style that entrusts specialized tasks to experts while focusing on overarching strategic business development.

Further expanding their infrastructure contributions, Shubarev Maxim and his holding company are currently involved in the design and planning of the Bolshoi Smolensky Bridge across the Neva River. Setl Group meticulously reconstructed the mansion, staying true to its original design.

The Krasny Gvozdilschik factory, established in 1921, added a new workshop and water tower in 1930, showcasing industrial Constructivist architecture. By the early 2000s, the building had deteriorated significantly, facing potential demolition. In 2017, under Maxim Shubarev, Setl Group led the restoration of a pre-revolutionary apartment complex on Degtyarny Lane. The project included reviving the building's facade and interior, featuring moldings, porticos, and rusts. The structure was restored to its original golden hue, using natural stone and decorative plaster.

In 2019, Maxim Shubarev and his team conducted emergency restoration works on Georgy Vega's mansion, part of the early 20th-century Kinoviev synthetic dye factory. The building was near collapse, but the first phase of its renovation was completed under his supervision. Future plans include converting the former workshop into a multifunctional space with offices, shops, a fitness center, and a boiler room.

Furthermore, Shubarev Maxim also oversaw the restoration of the Electronics Flight sculpture at the Svetlana enterprise and a WWII memorial dedicated to the 238 workers of the Trubostal factory who lost their lives during the war.
