The Gregorian calendar, which is the calendar system used by most of the world today, was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in October 1582. It was designed to replace the Julian calendar, which had been used for over 1,600 years. The new calendar was intended to correct a problem with the Julian calendar, which had a leap year every four years. Concretely, the problem was that the leap year was too long, and over time, this caused calendar dates to become out of sync with the astronomical year. One of the most significant changes made to the calendar was that the new year would start on January 1st. This was a break from tradition, as the Roman calendar had begun with the month of March, which was named after the Roman god Mars.

Let’s start at the very beginning
Before listing conferences taking place this year, it is of the utmost importance to understand the different types of conferences that exist and how they can be grouped into at least three categories (works not only for AI), which I will use to organize the list covered in this post:
- Academic conferences
- Technical conferences and events
- Business conferences and events
Academic conferences in AI typically focus on new research and developments in the field, with a strong emphasis on peer-reviewed papers and presentations. Technical conferences, on the other hand, tend to focus on the practical application of AI, with a focus on the latest technologies and trends in the field. Business conferences provide a platform for companies and organizations to showcase their products and services, network with other industry professionals, and learn about the latest business strategies and opportunities in the AI field. These three types of conferences all play an important role in advancing the field of AI, providing opportunities for researchers, practitioners, and industry leaders to come together and share knowledge and insights.

2. ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction

The Neural Information Processing Systems Foundation (NeurIPS) is a non-profit corporation whose purpose is to foster the exchange of research advances in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The conference was founded in 1987 and is now a multi-track interdisciplinary annual meeting that includes invited talks, demonstrations, and oral and poster presentations of refereed papers. Along with the conference are a professional exposition focusing on machine learning in practice, a series of tutorials, and topical workshops that provide a less formal setting for the exchange of ideas.

1. Khipu

How to select the ones that are top to me?
Anyone can create their own “events to attend in 2023” or filter an existing one in 5 minutes, with the following 2 simple steps (I personally followed these steps to make this list).
1. Put trending conferences and events on your radar
To expand your map with as many events and conferences as you can:
- Read as many “Top AI conferences to attend list” as you can.
- Read the conference’s selection of tech companies that you respect, especially tech giants like Meta, DeepMind or Google.
- Follow influential people in the field and check their agendas. What events will they attend this year?
- Look for upcoming events in your neighborhood, near your clients or technological hubs that you want to visit (e.g. Houston, Austin).
- Double or nothing!! Look for conferences in tourist places you want to visit. Who does not want a short vacation in Hawaii, all expenses paid by your company.
2. Select those that have the greatest impact for you
Select those events that are most worth investing in, balancing between time dedication and attendance fees (many events offer virtual free passes). Ask yourself the following:
- Is this event the right for me? Look for an attendant’s profile description like “this event is for CTOs, VPs, and decision-makers…”
- Is this the most influential event in the specific fields I’m working on? NLP, CV, AI on Edge, …
- It is this the most influential event in the business domain in which I work? Retail, Advertising, Social Media, Food & Agriculture, …
- Who are the main speakers? Will any of the rising stars in the field be in attendance?
